Course Title: NRSG 629 Introduction to Advanced Practice Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing

Course Description:

This graduate course is designed as an introduction into advanced practice psychiatric-mental health nursing. Orientation of the student to the clinical practice of psychiatric mental health advanced practice nursing is presented along with topics regarding working with the mental health preceptor. Focus is placed on developing early interview skills by teaching students their role in various mental health settings. Review of clinical practice expectations will be included. Topics of this course include interviewing and assessing patients with mental health concerns, completing the mental status examination, and completing a safety assessment. Students will orient to the DSM 5-TR and other relevant interview/assessment resources. Students will begin to explore the documentation associated with being a psychiatric mental health Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).

 

Catalog Course Description:

An introduction to advanced practice psychiatric-mental health nursing focusing on developing early interview skills, assessing patients with mental health concerns, completing the mental status examination, and a safety assessment. Students explore the DSM 5-TR, documentation, and other relevant interview/assessment resources.

 

Course Learning Outcomes: Upon completing this course the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a comprehensive mental health assessment. [This will be assessed through both written and verbal interview activities utilizing a standardized patient].
  2. Define the role and scope of the psychiatric APRN. [This will be measured through a written assignment in which students will create an elevator speech of their role].
  3. Utilize the DSM 5-TR resource. [This will be assessed via written work requiring the use of the DSM 5-TR and during interview with standardized patient during skills lab.]
  4. Demonstrate competency in suicide assessment and screening.

  1. Attend in person skills days (CLO 1,2,3)
  2. Return demonstration- Practice first day at clinic; how to introduce self; charting/working with preceptor; practice interviewing standardized patient during skills lab (CLO 1,3)
  3. Complete psychiatric evaluation on standardized patient which includes the mental status exam (MSE); risk assessment; documentation; de-escalation training. (CLO 1,3)
  4. Self-reflection on personal thoughts, beliefs, values, and ethics and how this impacts patients and care. (CLO 1,2,3)
  5. Demonstrate suicide assessments (CLO 4)
