Students who wish to enroll in more than 21 credits during a semester must submit an Excess Credit Petition for review.

To request approval, complete the Excess Credit Petition through DocuSign and obtain the required signatures from the appropriate individuals. Once all signatures have been collected, the completed form will automatically route to the Office of the Registrar for final review and approval.

The Registrar's Office will review your request and notify you of the decision using your official MSU email address.

Important Information

  • Petitions must be submitted no later than the fifth class day of the semester for which the additional credits are requested. Late petitions will not be reviewed.
  • Approval is not guaranteed and is based on a review of your academic record and the recommendations provided on the petition.
  • Students should not assume they are approved to exceed 21 credits until they have received official notification from the Registrar's Office.

Approval of an excess-credit petition does not guarantee enrollment in a course. Students must follow the procedures and deadlines outlined in the Add/Drop Schedule. After the fifth-class day, instructor approval is required to add a course, and instructors may approve or deny the request based on relevant considerations.

Before You Begin

Before submitting your petition, please:

  • Review your planned course schedule with your academic advisor.
  • Ensure all required signatures are obtained through the DocuSign process.
  • Submit your petition by the fifth class day of the semester in which you are requesting excess credits.
