Welcome to the Department of Microbiology & Cell Biology!
Microbiology and Cell Biology are exciting fields that are crucial to understanding
natural and human-made ecosystems, human and animal health, infectious disease, microbial
ecology, genetics, molecular evolution, clean water, alternative energy, and the potential
for life beyond Earth. The Department of Microbiology & Cell Biology (MCB) at Montana
State University (MSU) consists of a unique combination of expertise in cell and developmental
biology, genetics, pathogen biology, host/pathogen interactions, immunology/immunopathology,
microbial ecology and evolution, biofilm biology, bioremediation, biofuels, astrobiology,
and geomicrobiology.
With this diverse expertise, the department strives to provide a broad and thorough
curriculum to both undergraduate and graduate students, who are encouraged to cross
boundaries and push their studies/research via interactions across departments and
colleges. For undergraduates, the department has three degrees, Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Cell Biology & Neuroscience. MCB is home to Microbiology, Astrobiology, Global Health and Genetics minors. At the graduate level, the Department offers Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Microbiology & Immunology and BiologicalSciences.
We are MSU's premier department for pre-medical and pre-veterinary training, home
to the Montana Veterinary Program,Montana Medical Laboratory Science Program, and instructors support the teaching curricula in the WWAMI Medical Education Program. The department also contributes to MSU’s Center for Biofilm Engineering.
