Methods of Serving Alcohol Utilizing MSU's Authorized Licensed Provider
Except for a non-hosted full bar service, groups may not charge its guests for alcohol. In a non-hosted full bar service, guests may purchase directly from the licensed provider. In a hosted full bar service, alcohol is provided at no additional charge to its guests.
All events on campus that have alcohol must have an alcohol request form completed before the alcohol may be served. Each event must have a designated person responsible to insure that underage people are not served alcohol.
Donated alcohol
Groups may on occasion use product that is donated from a licensed provider or distributor only. Alcohol donated from a private individual or other non licensed provider is not permitted. Depending on the event groups using donated alcohol will pay a corkage fee to cover costs associated with the serving of the alcohol. The current MSU authorized licensed provider has the first right of refusal for donating the alcohol for the event before an outside source is permitted.
Groups may order alcohol from the authorized licensed alcohol provider in four ways.
- Customers may order full bar service in which the licensed provider will bring all supplies and staff to serve alcohol products to customers, including hard liquor, wine and beer. This can either be a hosted or a non-hosted event. The minimum charge for this service is $350 for MSU events, and $500 for non-MSU events. This means that if the group does not buy at least $350 or $500 from the bar they will pay the difference to meet that amount.
- Customers may order beer and wine for a catered meal that is served to the group as part of a meal. Catering is charged for the wine at the contract agreed price and passes the cost onto the customer with any appropriate service fees. Groups may not charge its guests for beer and wine.
- Customers may order bottles of wine or beer for a function and serve it to their guests
themselves as long as there is no fee charged to their guests to cover the cost of
the wine or beer. This is called a “Drop Off” and is ordered through Catering.
- Drop Offs are limited to no more than enough beer or wine for about 30 people. The guide for this amount is 12 bottles of wine or 2 cases of beer or any combination of this amount. In addition to the cost of the product, the customer will pay a $35 temporary beer and wine license, as required by law, and any other costs for supplies and labor associated with the event.
- Drop Offs are not permitted for amounts greater than those defined above. Customers are required to utilize an MSU authorized alcohol provider as defined above. All costs associated with the serving of alcohol will be charged for this service.
